Traders Groan as Amosun Shuts Down Sango Ota Market

Following his visit to Ota yesterday for the Commissioning of the newly opened Palms Mall,Governor Ibikunle Amosun has ordered the closure of trading activities in Sango Ota due to environmental violation caused by the traders. Mr. Governor could not stand the indiscrimate dumping of refuse and gross violation of environmental laws by the traders. This is not the first time Amosun will be frowning at the manner at which garbage are dumped on the median and inside the drainage in Sango Ota. As at this morning all shops and outlets along the ever busy Lagos-Abeokuta express way were locked. Traders were seen cleaning their environment and ridding the drainages off of dirt. Environmental law enforcement agents were on patrol even to this evening to ensure compliance with the Governor's directives.

A visit to the markets shows that traders are beginning to feel the heat of not making sales in a day. Majority of them who are on daily contributions (Ajo) are seen lamenting and grumbling.
As much as they acknowledge that they are guilty of violating environmental laws, they however wish that the closure order will not exceed 24 hours. There are speculations that the markets may not be opened until Thursday,22nd December.

It is important to note that the closure order came at a time when a renowned shopping mall just opened in the vicinity. With a mouth watering price slash offered by Shoprite this season; won't this be a big blow to the sales margin of the smaller outlets who are currently serving punishment for causing environmental nuisance?
